After futile attempts over several days to obtain information about the absence of the Rising Sun newspaper, TODAY in Seychelles yesterday received confirmation from the newspaper’s management that Rising Sun Daily News was not being published “for the time being.”

Speculation that the paper was closing down its operations began spreading last week as subscribers started to complain about not receiving their daily newspapers.

This newspaper tried in vain to call the office of the newspaper but the number remained busy throughout the day and could not be reached. However, one of the directors who has been active in the running of the daily paper, told our reporter that the paper had ceased publication for the time being, but declined to disclose any additional information about the underlying reasons.

It is common knowledge, however, that the paper launched in 2007 is owned by Dr. V. T Ramadoss. The doctor and businessman is believed to have fallen out with the ruling party in government. He has left his seat on the Central Committee of the Parti Lepep. Some observers have said the fall-out could be related to the closure of some of his busines enterprises. One of these, Agro Industries has shut down and its workers made redundant.

More recently Dr. Ramadoss resigned as the chairman of the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industries and according to unconfirmed reports has left Seychelles.

The Rising Sun Daily News was Seychelles’ first independent daily and colour newspaper which received extensive business support when it was first launched six years ago. Its offices are based at the Printec Press Holding premises where it was being printed.
